Dr. M. Katie Flanagan is an assistant instructor in the Department of Sport Management at Florida State University. She teaches an array of undergraduate and graduate level course including Diversity in Sport, Sport Ethics, Issues in Sport Management, Introduction to Sport Management, and Professional Development. Dr. Flanagan has also developed and assisted in the development of online courses including Cross Cultural Sport, Issues in Sport Management, Sport Law, and Sport History. When teaching, Dr. Flanagan incorporates a service learning curriculum which provides students with opportunities to gain experience volunteering in the community through sport and physical activity. Ongoing service learning projects involving FSU Sport Management students include establishing and facilitating a basketball program at a local resource center serving individuals experiencing homelessness, practicing yoga with women at the nearby federal prison, assisting with sport leagues for individuals with disabilities, helping to provide senior citizens with sport and physical activity opportunities, and volunteering at a community bicycle cooperative.

Prior to pursing a doctoral degree, Katie worked in journalism reporting via radio, print, and television covering both news and sport. She spent five years in state government with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Land and Recreation in communications and policy.

She was awarded a Ph.D. in Sport Management from FSU in May 2013. Her dissertation, titled “Managing Coed Soccer: Gender, Power, and Participation” is a critical ethnography of women’s experiences in an adult coed soccer league.

In 2000, Katie came to Tallahassee from Columbus, Ohio. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Sport Management from FSU in 2004 and then a master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Administration from FSU in 2007.

Katie is a certified group exercise instructor; she has taught cycling and yoga classes since 2006.
