Students choose to pursue our graduate degrees in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Social Science Education for several reasons. The dynamic and constantly changing field of Social Sciences brings great challenges to educators in schools, communities and universities. Our highly accomplished faculty have strong backgrounds in their respective subject areas and value close-working relationships. They want nothing more than to see their students succeed.
In this program, you’ll enjoy being part of an intimate group of students who take the same social science classes. Small class sizes allow you to form partnerships and study groups easily. We offer a small school atmosphere rarely found at a major research university.
We offer an online master’s degree for current teachers as well as on-campus master’s, specialist and doctoral degrees. The online program in particular allows working teachers to progress through our social science classes at their own pace.

Faculty who advise graduate students in the Social Science Education program include:
Jane C. Lo – Dr. Lo researches the political engagement of youth, social studies curriculum development, and developing measures of deep learning and collaboration. Her methodological expertise includes mixed-methods designs, design-based implementation research, interview and survey methods, and advanced correlational techniques. She teaches courses in social studies methods.
John Myers – Dr. Myers’ research examines the consequences of globalization for how youth learn to think and know about the complexities of the modern world. This work focuses on teaching and learning practices that foster global competence, citizenship, and identities as students come to understand core world history and social science concepts. He studies innovative international education programs and inquiry-oriented curriculum and instruction. A secondary line of research is the development of adolescents’ political thinking and beliefs.

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) do not retain scores longer than five years. If your test scores are older than five years, you may have to retake the test to have official scores sent directly to FSU from the testing agency. If you have the report that was mailed to your home address for older scores, then FSU will accept that report.

Curriculum choices in our master’s and specialist programs are designed to enable students to become teacher leaders, college instructors, as well as curriculum specialists, state testing specialists and textbook company representatives. Doctoral program graduates are prepared to become university professors, researchers and leaders in the field.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job outlook for high school teachers is expected to grow 7.5% through 2026, which equates to approximately 79,500 new jobs. The job outlook for instructional leaders/coordinators is expected to grow up to 10.5% through 2026. That translates into over 17,000 new jobs nationwide. The median national annual salary range for instructional leaders/coordinators is $64,450 per year. For university or college professors, the Bureau predicts a 10.3% increase in jobs by 2026, totaling 2,400 new jobs. The median national salary is $74,590 per year.
