The online graduate certificate in Coaching will provide you with advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in different areas of coaching. Topics include season planning, teaching skills effectively, annual training plan, team tactics, staff management, principles of training, evaluating talent, nutrition, sport psychology, motor learning, developing guiding principles for your sport, team captains, developing missions and goals, recruiting, and more.
The program consists of 12 credit hours of coursework that address the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) coaching competencies, including:
Students who complete the online graduate certificate in Coaching are confident and well-prepared for coaching at any level of sport.
Any individual who has an undergraduate degree and is eligible to enroll as a non-degree seeking student, or who qualifies for graduate admission to the university, is eligible to apply for admission to the online graduate certificate in Coaching.

Admission to the graduate certificate program is required. Students are not enrolled in a certificate program by virtue of being enrolled in related courses. Students must apply to and be admitted to the certificate program in order to be considered enrolled.
Admission to College of Education (COE) graduate certificate programs requires submission of the Certificate Admissions Form to the appropriate department Certificate Program Coordinator and to the COE Office of Academic Services and Intern Support (OASIS) prior to the completion of two courses in the certificate program.
The Certificate Admissions Form must identify the courses and anticipated semesters you intend to take to fulfill certificate requirements.
Advanced Coaching (PET 5753)
This course, aimed at the coach who is serious about learning the latest research in the field, is an in-depth study of NASPE’s eight domains of coaching competencies.
Athlete Recruitment (SPM 5350)
This unique course covers identifying and evaluating talent, decision-making theories of recruits, influencing factors and persons, tracking systems, sales, communication tactics, developing a recruiting philosophy, increasing success in making good decisions on the type of student-athlete to recruit to fit the needs of the university, the athletic program and the student athlete.
Motor Learning for Coaches (PET 5235)
This course covers how people learn skilled actions and how the principles of motor performance and learning can be useful in coaching a particular sport. Theories and principles explaining motor behavior, as well as the psychological factors related to and/or affecting motor skill acquisition and performance are explored.
Sport Psychology for Coaches (APK 5121)
This course presents the fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge needed in coaching various sports. The focus is on critical thinking and practical application of scientific findings.
After all certificate coursework is completed, but no later than 2 weeks after grades post, a Certificate Completion Form must be filled out and submitted to the Program Coordinator. Approved completion forms will be forwarded for processing and be posting to your official transcript.
