Faculty and student scholars from across the College of Education at Florida State University are conducting research addressing the theme of “Teaching and Learning.” Topics covered include how to improve teaching and teachers at both the K-12 and college levels, faculty-student interaction, teachers’ professional development, teaching strategies for different domains, student motivation, models of formative assessment, and learning strategies. Their work on these issues may affect teachers, students, and the institutions they belong to in the U.S.

Faculty and students from across the College of Education at Florida State University are conducting research focused on out-of-school influences on learning and instruction. Their work on these issues highlights important considerations for teaching and learning in whatever contexts it occurs, both in the U.S. and around the world. The wide range of topics covered include grief among U.S. college students, parenting challenges of gifted children in Italy, teachers' use of social media, economic relevance of instruction, and the effects of state and federal policy on teachers and students.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. The Florida Department of Education defines bullying as systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students or employees that is severe or pervasive enough to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment; or unreasonably interfere with the individual's school performance or participation.

Dr. Marty Swanbrow Becker, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems, was recently invited to author a blog post for the Brookings Institution.

Here in the FSU College of Education, one of our greatest strengths is the collaboration of our faculty and students across all four departments on research that informs both policy and practice. Educational psychology is a field that focuses on studying educational and learning methods, cognitive assessments, and aptitude testing for children in an educational setting. Educational psychology strives to understand how different learning approaches impact the development of a student body, essentially attempting to answer the "why" behind certain educational philosophies and policies. The majority of opportunities in this field become available once you have attained your Ph.D.

The field of social science is quite broad. Subjects and studies that fall under the social sciences purview include political science, economics, sociology, psychology, and more. Because it covers such a wide breadth, there are ample doctorate and post-doctorate research opportunities for students in the field of social science.
