Dr. Deb Osborn is a Professor and Co-director of Psychological and Counseling Services in the Educational Psychology and Learning Systems Department at Florida State University. Her current research focuses primarily on factors that impact individuals’ career development. She also has a passion for exploring “what works” in service delivery, with a special interest in the role technology plays in enhancing and extending services.

Dr. Osborn’s work has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, such as The Career Development Quarterly, The Journal of Employment Counseling, The Career Planning and Adult Development Journal, Canadian Psychology, and Professional School Counseling.

In her position as Professor, she teaches courses such as Introduction to Health Service Psychology, Design & Critical Review of Research in Counseling, History and Systems of Psychology, and Professional Development Seminar in Ethics and Advocacy for Health Services Psychology.

Dr. Osborn holds several memberships in professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association, and the National Career Development Association (NCDA). She has served on national professional boards, and is past NCDA President.

Dr. Osborn is Co-Director and Senior Research Associate for the Center for the Study of Technology in Counseling and Career Development at FSU. In this position, she is responsible for overseeing and conducting research on the design and use of information technology in counseling, as well as the study of vocational behavior and the delivery of career services.

Over the course of her career, she has been honored with several awards, including the Robert M. Gagné Faculty Research Award (2015), the JoAnn Harris- Florida Counseling Association Bowlsbey Award for Excellence in the Field of Technology in Career Development (2010), Outstanding Practitioner Award (National Career Development Association; 2009), Counselor of the Year (Florida Counseling Association; 2006), and the American Counseling Association’s Emerging Leader Award (2005). She is also a nationally certified counselor, and a fellow of both the American Counseling Association and the National Career Development Association. Research Areas:

  • Identifying predictors of and best practices for increasing positive career outcomes and decreasing negative outcomes
  • Applying career-related theory (especially Cognitive Information Processing theory) in research and practice
  • Designing and using assessments in career services
  • Exploring the role technology can play in enhancing and extending services
